Well as you've probably guessed from the huge title at the top of the site, we are Stowmarket Fencing Club. The club has been running since April 1998. We're a growing group of enthusiastic fencers who mainly fence just for fun and a good workout, although we do have several members who have competed in National tournamments in the past.
We meet on Sunday afternoons from 4-6pm in the Main Sports Hall at Mid-Suffolk Leisure Centre. For a map of how to find us, click here.
Worthy of note are our beginners courses which run 3 times a year. The senior course costs £60 and the junior course £40 (at time of writing but this is subject to change). For seniors this is for a 6 week beginners course and juniors 8 weeks. This includes use of all equipment, coaching, hall-hire, insurance etc. They are very popular so book early to avoid dissapointment. When the course finishes if you wish to continue to fence at the club, you will need a minimum of Social Membership from the British Fencing Association. This is currently priced at £10 per year and must be purchased through the club.
If you have fenced before and would like to join the club or just visit us then you are more than welcome to do so. We will however require proof of insurance, BFA/FIE/etc. membership, before we can allow you to fence.
Time to meet the committee:
Chairman, Secretary, Coach & Webmonkey
This is Stuart Clough, me. I am the Chairman, Secretary, Assistant Coach and Webmonkey. I took up fencing in January 2003 at Birmingham University and I joined the club in Easter that year when I was home for the holidays. I continued to return to the club during the holidays until I moved back to Suffolk permanently. I currently hold a Level 3 Foil Coaching Qualification and Level 2 Sabre Coaching Qualification from the British Academy of Fencing. I also hold the equivalent qualifications from England Fencing and am a Wheelchair Fencing Coach, qualified with the British Disabled Fencing Association.
Head Coach
This is Steven Morley our Head Coach. Steven has been coaching for a number of years now and has many qualifications to prove it. He currently holds a Level 4 (Advanced) Foil Coaching Qualification and Level 2 Epee Coaching Qualification from the British Academy of Fencing. He also holds the equivalent qualifications from England Fencing.
Head Junior Coach
This is Elaine Sayer, the Head Junior Coach. She learnt to fence at the club a few years ago and has since turned her talents to coaching. She currently holds a Level 3 Foil Coaching Qualification from the British Academy of Fencing. She also holds the equivalent qualifications from England Fencing. In January 2009, she set up the club's Junior section, which has grown as time has progressed and has become an integral part of the club.
Treasurer
This is Simon, the club Treasurer. If you owe money you'd better watch out. He joined the club several years ago and has kept our money in order for most of that time. When he's not chasing you for your money, then he'll probably be chasing you down the piste with a sword.
Armourer
This is Damon, the club Armourer. If you need equipment looking at then this is the man to see (accompanied by a bribe of some sort). He has been fencing with the club for several years now and took up the position of Armourer to help us out.
Ladder/Poule Coordinaters
These are Chris and Sean. On the first Sunday of every month, we will hold a poule. These are the people behind it. If you have any questions about it, then these are the people to ask.
